Tasty treats were on the menu for Dyke Yaxley – all in the name of charity!
The team at our Shrewsbury office held a cake sale in aid of our two chosen charity causes for the year – the Harry Johnson Trust and the Shropshire branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association. And thanks to the generosity of colleagues (and their healthy appetites!) we managed to raise over £100 to be shared between the two.
Jackie Young, who co-ordinates the fund raising efforts at the company’s head office in Old Potts Way, said there had been an excellent response to this year’s event.
“We had a Valentine’s theme to the sale this year, and we’re just so very grateful to the overwhelming number of colleagues who contributed to the vast array of goodies we had on sale.
“We’re also grateful to the colleagues who stepped in to buy the cakes and boost our charity totals.”
It was a good day all round for Jackie herself too, who not only won the competition with her triple-layer cake, but she also received a surprise Valentine’s visit from the Shropshire Star too with a bouquet of roses for the firm’s charity work in the last 12 months.
“I really couldn’t believe it when the flowers arrived, and it was a lovely way to round off a fantastic day of fund raising,” said Jackie.
“We work hard every year to raise as much money as we can for two causes nominated by members of our team, and to have the flowers delivered really was the ‘icing on the cake’ of this year’s event.”
Jackie’s recipe for her triple-layer cake with a chocolate biscuit base, sponge middle layer and two chocolate biscuit hearts on top, was praised too by Managing Director Laurie Riley – who has a reputation himself for being the company’s “Star Baker”.
“We chose Jackie’s cake as the winner as it not only fitted our Valentine’s theme perfectly with its heart shape, but it also tasted delicious!
“Our annual cake sale is always a popular date in the diary, and this year’s effort was no exception – we know both charities will put the funds we raise to excellent use.”
